Movie Night - Hope Floats (1998)

Birdee Pruitt: "Childhood is what you spend the rest of your life trying to overcome. That's what momma always says. She says that beginnings are scary, endings are usually sad, but it's the middle that counts the most. Try to remember that when you find yourself at a new beginning, just give hope a chance to float up and it will...."

Imagine yourself being on tv, ready for a free makeover and ending up to be the biggest joke ever when you learn that it's a Jerry Springer like show where your best friend and husband reveals that they are having an affair. That's how the story unraveled...

What I like about the movie is the fact that it has shown not just one but several types of relationships. You will witness:
a. a close but complicated mother and daughter relationship between Birdee and Bernice and Birdee and Ramona

b. an endearing relationship between the grandma and her grandchildren as shown by Ramona to Travis and Bernice

c. Justin's unrequited love towards Birdee
d. the crumbling marriage of Birdee and Bill
not to mention the relationship that people have in a small town where everybody knows practically every single person living in the community.

I don't know why but somehow, this movie managed to hit several of my small sensitive spots... I can't help but shed a tear or two as I watched Bernice cry as her unfaithful father speed away.

Watching this with Mommy made my friday movie night more special. It helped me relate to the characters more because I myself have a special but complicated relationship with my mom. sigh.
Can't wait for next friday!
